Giving Thanks to Our Teachers

At this time of year, there is an annual activity that I look forward to doing. In the last two weeks of the school-year, as it comes to a close, many parents take the time to show thanks to the teachers and administration.

A group of individuals whom have helped guide, mentor and mold the learning in their children. What a honored position to be in, for a teacher. I am not naive to the fact that the classroom is and can be challenging for the teachers and the students alike. I have the opportunity to teach in public and private schools weekly, a rare look in the lives of our students.

I have witnessed seeing a child's brain sparked by a teacher, doors of knowledge and information introduced that may otherwise not have been. Giving our students information that helps guide them towards their purpose in life, helping them realize their own potential, pushing them to the next level. This is beautiful. Knowledge and information is powerful and positive.  

Many families go out and purchase lovely gifts for the teachers and support staff — very kind and generous gesture to do. And I know is greatly appreciated. What I enjoy, however, is to sit down and write a thank you note to the teacher(s) and other role models. I like to tell them what an impact they have had on my child. To say a simple thank you. To share about the growth, maturity, likes and interesting facts of the year. When you have something positive to say, a compliment — you should say it. I like to talk about the challenges my child has had and how situations were overcome, teaching methods were of value and what lesson they learned this year. Every year is a year of growth, as we are always learning. This is true for every grade. Once you start writing, the process and thoughts just flow right out on the paper. You will be surprised at the details of your letter and you will feel good about your thoughts of your child and their educational journey this past year. 

Perhaps you will find the time in the next two weeks to say thank you to a teacher, support staff, administrator. I know they would appreciate it. Go for it!

Teaching, once again, is a honored profession. Each of us, every day, are teachers, even if we don't realize it. We have this honor. And as I like to say, "Be the Better Person" out there through kindness, respect and love.
