Flu Etiquette, Oh Bless You!!

These are gestures that will keep us healthier through the flu season while we put our best foot forward.

The weather is changing daily and with severe temperature changes comes an increase of the common cold. The experience of holiday weekends, weddings, business retreats or simply dining out with family, friends or business associates is the norm and cannot be avoided because of a cold. The luxury of going to a restaurant is very common and not such a luxury or special occasion event as it once was. The dining table whether at home, restaurant or a bar is truly a social event full of in and outs of social behavior, good conversation and the occasional sneeze or cough.

We must remember the simple gestures that show we have good manners. Cover your mouth when yarning or coughing, turning your head and cover your nose/mouth when sneezing and coughing. If the sneeze is more then two sneezes, perhaps a trip to the restroom is in line. We should not blow our nose at the business board room or dining table. Go to the restroom, blow your nose and then wash your hands. Air kisses replace actual cheek kisses. Good eye contact replaces the handshake. Washing your hands before and after you eat is wise, as well.  Carry extra tissues or a handkerchief in your briefcase/purse. Beware of personal space and how close you are to another person. Don’t forget the excuse me or g-d bless you! These are gestures that will keep us healthier through the flu season while we put our best foot forward.

The simple action of good eye contact with a pleasant smile is worth its weight in gold.
