See's Candies Brings Original Recipes, Original Charm to Beachwood Place Mall

Beachwood Place Mall is offering new sugar fix for that mid-shopping slump.

See's Candies, founded by Mary See in Los Angeles in 1921, opens today at 9:30 a.m. near the food court.

The confection shop boasts that it uses the same recipes — and the same black and white checker floor tile — that Mary See used in her kitchen when she and her son founded the first shop.

The candy has no high fructose corn syrup, wax or added preservatives, and the store's area manager Kristi Jean promised the freshest ingredients in each peice.

See's Candies, now owned by Warren Buffet-led Berkshire Hathaway, has a following on the West Coast — in fact, their factory is the one used for the legendary I Love Lucy episode in the YouTube clip to the right — and today has stores across the country. Beachwood's is the first in Ohio, but another shop is planned soon for the Easton shopping center in Columbus.

The shop sells over 100 varieties, including their most popular: the milk chocolate Bordeaux, filled with brown sugar buttercream; the Scotchmallow, made with honey marshmallow and caramel; California brittle, hard toffee with California almonds; almond buds, with caramel; and pecan buds, with vanilla caramel.

The store also boasts some more unusual treats: marzipan, for one, and low-calorie lollipops in flavors like chocolate, cafe latte and butterscotch.

And, for St. Patty's Day, a giant divinity chocolate — vanilla cream whipped with egg whites, mixed with English walnuts, and rolled in chocolate, dusted with cocoa powder and topped with three pine nuts — that looks just like a potato.

P.S. In case you were wondering who has the world record for the largest lolipop — well, you guessed it. The chocolate pop weighed in at 7,003 pounds and measured over 16 feet tall. So there's that.
