Girl Scouts Are 99 Years Young

Local troops celebrate 99th anniversary with new technology: a smart phone app and credit card payments

The days of hitting three grocery stores on a Saturday in March to find the coveted Girl Scout Cookie booth are over: now, there’s an app for that.

The Girl Scouts of America have rolled out a Cookie Locator application for smart phones. The app is free, and allows users to input a zip code to find cookie booths in their neighborhood and even get e-mail reminders when cookies go on sale near you.

Or, if you are feeling silly, you can find out your “cookie personality.”

“Normally, we get a ton of phone calls from people asking where they can get cookies,” said Girls Scouts of Northeast Ohio Director of Business Services Marianne Love. But this year, she said, those calls have slowed down. “I think that people are using the technology and I think it’s cool how it works.”

Additionally, 200 of the around 2,700 troops in Northeast Ohio will be the first in the country to accept credit cards at booth sales.

The Scouts will have credit card readers that attach to a cell phone and can scan the cards. A receipt is e-mailed or texted to the customer.

Cookies officially go on sale today. The application lists several sales in Beachwood this weekend.
