Special Speakers for MLK Weekend

Remembering Martin Luther King

Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple (23737 Fairmount Blvd., Beachwood) will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Friday, Jan. 13, at the 6:15 p.m. Shabbat Service featuring two Freedom Riders, Rabbi Israel Dresner and Hank Thomas. The service will be followed by a reception.

Affectionately known as "the most arrested rabbi in America," Rabbi Israel Dresner participated in the very first interfaith Freedom Ride in 1961 and has been fiercely
fighting for human rights and social justice ever since. He was part of the all-clergy Freedom Rider bus, the Tallahassee Ten, who were arrested in Florida
for their attempts at integrating a diner. He was honored with the 2011 Rabbis for Human Rights Award.

Joining Rabbi Dresner on Jan. 13 will be Hank Thomas, a Congress Of Racial Equality (CORE) Freedom Rider who was 19 years old and a student at Howard University when he joined his first of several Freedom Rides. Last May,
PBS aired an acclaimed series about the Freedom Riders, which featured both Rabbi Dresner and Hank Thomas.

This service is open to all and is a powerful way to remember Dr. Martin Luther King while hearing the stories from these two brave civil rights activists.
