University of Phoenix Cleveland Campus Hosts Military Transitioning Event

University hosts Start Strong Event to connect career resources and opportunities to veterans, active-duty service members and their spouses during Veterans Day week

WHAT:  As hundreds of thousands of service members return home from Iraq and Afghanistan, the veterans’ unemployment rate is 9.7 percent1 – significantly higher than the national unemployment rate of 7.8 percent.2  The need for career services for transitioning active-duty service members, veterans and their families has never been more immediate.

Entering the civilian job sector after a military career requires careful preparation and planning. To meet this need, University of Phoenix® invites veterans, active duty-service members and their spouses to a special Start Strong Event to learn about career resources essential for transitioning success. At the event, University of Phoenix staff and faculty, along with local veterans, will share important information on the following topics:

  • Panel Discussion “Transition to civilian life”- Attendees will gain insight into making the transition from military to the civilian sector by listening to a special panel discussion with representatives from the military, Veterans Affairs, government, local corporations and University of Phoenix military alumni. Attendees have the opportunity to learn and ask questions about how to translate their military experience into the civilian job market. Panelists include:

  • Ron Adkins, a retired Marine Master Sergeant, served in the military for 24 years and earned a bachelor’s degree from the Mississippi State University. After retiring, he worked as a contractor for the Department of Defense in Iraq and Sicily. He earned an MBA from the University of Phoenix in 2008 and is working toward a doctorate degree at the school. He is a business owner, reserve police officer and also works as an engineering program manager.

  • Ed Knetig, who earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy, is in his second career as an engineer. He retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel after 22 years as an airlift pilot and joint staff officer. He is decorated for participation in armed conflicts in Bosnia, Somalia, Haiti, Iraq and Afghanistan. He has a MBA in finance from the University of Colorado.

  • Dress for Success Workshop – Attendees will learn how to "dress for success” to better understand the proper attire for job interviewing and working in the civilian work environment.

Also at the event, Cleveland native Danielle Thomas will be recognized for winning the Outstanding Military Student award. Thomas enlisted in the Navy in 2004 as a Master-at-Arms (police officer) and served stints in Maryland and Guantanamo Bay. She is now attending the University of Phoenix and works full time at a Cleveland company that transitions the elderly back into the community to live independently.
