 dreds of thousands of service members return home from Iraq and Afghanis
 tan\, the veterans&rsquo\; unemployment rate is 9.7 percent1 &ndash\; si
 gnificantly higher than the national unemployment rate of 7.8 percent.2 
 &nbsp\;The need for career services for transitioning active-duty servic
 e members\, veterans and their families has never been more immediate.\n
 &nbsp\;\nEntering the civilian job sector after a military career requir
 es careful preparation and planning. To meet this need\, University of P
 hoenix&reg\; invites veterans\, active duty-service members and their sp
 ouses to a special Start Strong Event to learn about career resources es
 sential for transitioning success. At the event\, University of Phoenix 
 staff and faculty\, along with local veterans\, will share important inf
 ormation on the following topics:\n&nbsp\;\n\nPanel Discussion &ldquo\;T
 ransition to civilian life&rdquo\;- Attendees will gain insight into mak
 ing the transition from military to the civilian sector by listening to 
 a special panel discussion with representatives from the military\, Vete
 rans Affairs\, government\, local corporations and University of Phoenix
  military alumni. Attendees have the opportunity to learn and ask questi
 ons about how to translate their military experience into the civilian j
 ob market. Panelists include:\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nRon Adkins\, a retired Marin
 e Master Sergeant\, served in the military for 24 years and earned a bac
 helor&rsquo\;s degree from the Mississippi State University. After retir
 ing\, he worked as a contractor for the Department of Defense in Iraq an
 d Sicily. He earned an MBA from the University of Phoenix in 2008 and is
  working toward a doctorate degree at the school. He is a business owner
 \, reserve police officer and also works as an engineering program manag
 er. \n\n&nbsp\;\n\nEd Knetig\, who earned a bachelor&rsquo\;s degree in 
 engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy\, is in his second career as
  an engineer. He retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel afte
 r 22 years as an airlift pilot and joint staff officer. He is decorated 
 for participation in armed conflicts in Bosnia\, Somalia\, Haiti\, Iraq 
 and Afghanistan. He has a MBA in finance from the University of Colorado
 . \n\n&nbsp\;\n\nDress for Success Workshop &ndash\; Attendees will lear
 n how to "dress for success&rdquo\; to better understand the proper atti
 re for job interviewing and working in the civilian work environment. \n
 \n&nbsp\;\nAlso at the event\, Cleveland native Danielle Thomas will be 
 recognized for winning the Outstanding Military Student award. Thomas en
 listed in the Navy in 2004 as a Master-at-Arms (police officer) and serv
 ed stints in Maryland and Guantanamo Bay. She is now attending the Unive
 rsity of Phoenix and works full time at a Cleveland company that transit
 ions the elderly back into the community to live independently.\n&nbsp\;
