TRACK AND FIELD Beachwood's Olivia Mayfield captured a Division II district long jump title during competition yesterday at Cortland Lakeview High School. Mayfield will be joined by teammates Gabrielle Perryman, Traci Milliner, Kyndal Wilson and Arielle Ginsberg at this week's regional meet with a chance to advance to the state meet in Columbus. Mayfield jumped 17-3.25 to win the event at Lakeview. The talented junior also teamed up with Perryman, Milliner and Wilson to place second in the 4x100-meter relay with a clocking of 49.87. TRACK AND FIELD Beachwood's boys' track and field team got off on the right foot at last week's Chagrin Valley Conference Metro Division Meet before poor weather postponed the second day of competition. The Bison finished with a team total of 46 points to lead Independence (30) after day one of the division meet. The competition is scheduled to be completed Monday at Cuyahoga Heights. Isidro Cora and Chris Lardie captured CVC titles for Beachwood as Cora won the discus with a heave of 142-6 while Lardie went 19-6 to win the long jump event. BASEBALL The Bison got a pair of standout pitching performances from Ryan Moss and won three of four games to improve to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the Chagrin Valley Conference's Metro Division. Moss won for the third time in four decisions in a 4-3 victory over Gilmour Academy Saturday. Moss and reliever Todd Goldberg limited the Lancers to just five hits on the day while Zach Smith collected a pair of hits, scored a run and drove home a run. Moss threw a complete game, four-hitter with eight strikeouts in a 6-1 triumph over Hawken. Jared Moss had a pair of hits and drove home two runs for …
SOFTBALL The Lady Bison did pick up their first win of the week against Hathaway Brown, but the girls dropped to 1-9 overall on the season after losing a pair of games to Normandy during a Saturday doubleheader. Beachwood fell to Normandy by scores of 11-1 and 10-0. In the first game, the Lady Bison trailed just 2-0 heading into the fifth inning when pitcher Melanie Small was hit in the knee with a line drive and was forced to leave the game. TRACK AND FIELD Beachwood's boys' and girls' track and field teams traveled to the Pymatuning Valley Laker Relays yesterday with the Lady Bison taking a runner-up finish while the boys placed third overall. Olivia Mayfield continued her standout season for the girls as she was second in the long jump (15-5.75) and third in the high jump (4-8). Arielle Ginsberg added a second place finish in the 400 meters (1:04.43), Gabrille Perryman was third in the 200 meters (27.12) Julia Friedman was third in the 3200 meters (13:48.82). TRACK AND FIELD Beachwood's boys' and girls' track and field teams both turned in fifth-place finishes at last week's Gross Invitational held at Cuyahoga Heights. Isidro Cora and Marzel Atkins placed second and third in the boys' discus event with throws of 133-7.5 and 130-7. The Bison also finished second in the 4x200 meter relay (1:35.67) and second in the 4x100 meter relay (46.25). BASEBALL The Bison returned home from a successful trip to Myrtle Beach only to be sidelined from playing in Northeast Ohio. Beachwood posted a 1-0 win over Worthington Christian and a 3-2 victory over Bethlehem (Ky.)  while in South Carolina, giving head coach Ben Singer reason to be eager to start the team's regular season schedule. "We played really well and got some good pitching and defense," said Singer of his team's first action of the season. Girls' Basketball  The girls' team had a great season – their best ever – but ultimately fell out of division semifinals Thursday with a 65-49 loss to the Gilmour Academy. Boys' Basketball Tuesday was a big night for the boys, who easily beat Edgewood 76-54 to move on to Harvey Saturday night. Ultimately it was the Red Raiders who ended the Bison tournament run. WRESTLING A one-day delay and some stiff competition have not deterred Beachwood's wrestling team at the Division III district tournament in Garfield Heights this weekend. The Bison still have all five of their qualifiers in the running for state qualifying berths, including three in this afternoon's  semifinals. The tournament did not get under way until Sasturday after Friday's inclement weather. Wrestling Beachwood will send five grapplers to the rugged Garfield Heights Division III District Tournament next weekend and three of them will be number one seeds in their weight classes. Freshman Ryan Harris (125 pounds), senior Alec Jacober (130) and junior David Shapiro (171) all won sectional titles at the Beachwood sectional Saturday. Harris rolled to an 18-0 technical fall over Cody Miller of Pymatuning Valley in the finals, Jacober pinned Logan Hnderson of Berkshire at the 2:54 mark of their championship hbout and Shapiro escaped with a 3-2 decision over Tyler Porter of Chanel. …
Boys' Basketball The Beachwood Bison boys' basketball team had a successful week, winning both of their contests. Last Tuesday the Bison traveled to Fairport and handed the Skippers an 88-57 thrashing. Beachwood returned home on Friday for senior day. Their eight seniors, led by a 24-point effort out of Andrew Somogyi and a 19-point performance from Jeremiah Townes, went out with a 71-52 win over Wickliffe. “Having eight seniors is special, I don’t care how big your program is,” coach Pecjak said. “Those kids wanted to leave here with a victory and the were going to do whatever it took to get…
Boys’ Basketball The Bison dropped a tough 46-41 decision at Independence as the host team’s zone defense made things difficult for a Bison offense that had been putting up points in recent games. “They (Independence) did a  good job controlling the clock,” said Beachwood head coach Jason Pecjak, whose team dropped to 6-4 in division play and 8-7 overall. “They played a good zone defense and we just didn’t shoot the ball well. Boys’ Basketball The Bison continue to win games with a new offensive approach as they captured Chagrin Valley Conference victories over Newbury and Cardinal last week to improve to 7-6 overall on the season and 5-3 in Metro Division action. Five Bison hit for double figures in a 79-47 tour of Newbury last week. Jeremiah Townes led the scoring with 18 points, Ellis Cohen and Andrew Somogyi each finished with 13 points, John Davis added 12 and Kelly Rice chipped in with another 10 points. Wrestling The Bison grapplers had three champions emerge from the prestigious John Matteucci Memorial Tournament contested at Eastlake North High School Saturday. Sammy Gross (112 pounds), Ryan Harris (125) and Alec Jacober (130) were all individual weight class champions for Beachwood, which placed fifth as a team with 158.5 points. Gross captured a tight 5-3 decision over Lake Catholic’s Sean Fee in the finals, Harris escaped with a 2-1 decision over Lake Catholic’s David Coates and Jacober pinned Rhodes’ Bobby Madison at the 5:52 mark of their title bout. Boys’ Basketball A revamped offense and a maturing team have head coach Jason Pecjak’s Bison playing their strongest basketball of the season. Last week’s 61-50 triumph over Berkshire pulled Beachwood to 5-6 overall and 3-3 in the Chagrin Valley Conference Metro Division. Senior Jeremiah Townes had a huge night in the win as he finished with a team-high 29 points. John Davis contributed another 12 points while Ellis Cohen finished with 11. The strongest high school winter sports teams have begun to distinguish themselves from the pack, and Beachwood’s teams show promise to end the season well. Wrestling There are great things in store for the Beachwood wrestling program as the Bison have the potential to become one of the top teams in the Chagrin Valley Conference. That promise is beginning to show in the team’s recent tournament and dual match performances.
