Week in Sports: Track Still Going Strong

Beachwood's Mayfield jumps to a title, four other girls advance to regional meet

 

TRACK AND FIELD

Beachwood's Olivia Mayfield captured a Division II district long jump title during competition yesterday at Cortland Lakeview High School. Mayfield will be joined by teammates Gabrielle Perryman, Traci Milliner, Kyndal Wilson and Arielle Ginsberg at this week's regional meet with a chance to advance to the state meet in Columbus.

Mayfield jumped 17-3.25 to win the event at Lakeview. The talented junior also teamed up with Perryman, Milliner and Wilson to place second in the 4x100-meter relay with a clocking of 49.87. Ginsberg gained the fourth and final qualifying spot in the 800 meters with a time of 2:22.71.

The Bison boys' and girls' teams both finished second during the Chagrin Valley Conference Metro Division Meet earlier in the week. Mark Blackwell won the 110-meter hurdles (11.74) and was third in the 300-meter hurdles (44.76) while teammate Ari Sobel won the 100 meters (11.74) and placed second in both the 200 meters (24.06) and the 400 meters (52.03). Beachwood picked up second places from the 4x200-meter relay of Blackwell, Howard Sobel, Chris Lardie, and Virdell Robinson (1:40.24) and the 4x100-meter relay of Howard Sobel, Lardie, Blackwell and Robinson (46.73). Third places came from Robinson in the 100 meters (11.88), Jason Edwards in the 400 meters (54.92), William Wolkoff in the 3200 meters (11:10.52) and the 4x400 meter relay of Howard Sobel, Edwards, Volodymyr Kovalenko and Ari Sobel (3:52.11).

Beachwood's girls dropped a tight duel with Cuyahoga Heights for the team title despite posting nine first-place finishes. Julia Friedman won both the 1600 meters (5:49.22) and the 3200 meters (13:21.41) for the Lady Bison. Other winners were Mayfield in the long jump (15-11.5), Perryman in the 300-meter hurdles (51.96), Wilson in the 100 meters (13.44); Ginsberg in the 400 meters (1:03.47), Samantha Tall in the 800 meters (2:40.85), the 4x100-meter relay of Perryman, Mayfield, Milliner and Wilson (53.62) and the 4x400-meter relay of Tall, Hannah Richardson, Perryman and Ginsberg (4:28.93). Perryman placed second in the long jump (14-1), Rena Andrews was second in the 3200 meters (13:39.05), the 4x200-meter relay of Milliner, Wilson, Richardson and Ginsberg was second (1:55.93) and the 4x800-meter relay of Friedman, Andrews, Torrie Sullins and Tall also placed second (10:56.70).

The Ravenna Division II regional meet wll start at 4 p.m. Thursday and will continue Saturday with finals beginning at 11:30 a.m. The top four qualifiers in each event advance to the state meet in Columbus.

BASEBALL

The Bison were eliminated from the Division III sectional tournament after a 7-4 setback to Independence. Zach Smith (3-2) started and took the loss for Beachwood while Ryan Moss came out of the bullpen with a solid relief stint, striking out five batters.

The loss dropped the Bison to 12-7 overall on the season.
