Poll: Was Susan G. Komen Right to Pull Planned Parenthood Funding?

Decision is generating controversy

The decision by Susan G. Komen for the Cure to halt its funding of Planned Parenthood has generated controversy this week, Huffington Post reports

After partnering with Planned Parenthood for the past five years to provide cancer screenings to low-income patients, Komen announced on Tuesday that it would sever ties with the family planning provider because it is under investigation in Congress.

However, the groups that prompted that investigation are anti-abortion advocacy organizations that have long criticized Planned Parenthood over the fact that some of its clinics offer abortions, Huff Post says.

The move has prompted a backlash of angry comments on the breast cancer organization's message boards and Facebook wall

Where is the "I whole-heartedly support this decision" option? Aside from the fact that PP is under investigation, birth control has been linked to breast cancer! Why would they support PP is a better question!

Look at the whole picture. The public education that PP provides is vital, and there are many methods of birth control.

Cameron and Ken you need to educate yourselves as to who is behind the allegations/witch hunt against PP and your birth control comment - are you saying that PP shouldn't provide birth control? If you are, I hope you're ready to take care of many many unwanted babies.

Let me tell you about my beautiful surprise. He is a college graduate and serving his country. He is also a small business owner and while in college help to found a fraternity that concentrates on helping the needy. And it was his family that educated him in social and moral values. We didn't need PP... oh and yes we were in the lower income bracket growing up. We used our education to better ourselves and didn't rely on constant government assistance.

It is ridiculous that an organization fighting to SAVE lives would be contributing funds to an organization whose main goal is to prevent or END lives. Like Cameron and Ken, I wholeheartedly agree with the decision to pull the funding, but I wish that it could have been done on moral grounds alone without needing to lean on the investigation as the reason.

Low-income patients can get their cancer screenings paid for without having to walk into a Planned Parenthood office.

Given the poll choices, I think we all know where Debbie Palmer (the author) stands on this issue.

PP's main goal is NOT to end lives. That is the misconception that so many people have when you mention Planned Parenthood! People think it's soley there for abortion purposes. PP has many other wonderful services that they provide to low income women. Just think about all those women who relied on PP for their mammogram each year now do not have that option....and think of all the women who won't even bother to get a mammogram now because they don't know where else to go, and how many will end up with end stage breast cancer because it wasn't caught as early as it could have been with PP's services.

Kristina D. needs to check her facts. One main reason for the cut in funding to PP did NOT provide mammograms but sent women to another facality SGK then decided to just fund the other facility. This eliminates the cost of the middle man and directly funds what they stand for and not the PP who does primarily fund abortions and the research for abortions and many forms of birth control that are associated with abortions and even CANCER. SGK should stay as far a way from PP as they can if they really want to stay within their mission statement. And PP immediate attack of one of their largest benefactors is just sooo wrong. It shows the gratitude of the truly selfabsorb entitlement attitued of their organization.

The reason they cut funding, which was in several articles, was because of the Florida Representative's inquiry into PP's funds and to inquire as to whether funding was for abortions. SGK cut off funds because they have a new policy that states that they will not fund any organization that is being investigated.

The funds that SGK granted to PP were used for breast health measures only. They were not funding abortions. PP's missionl is not to "prevent or END lives", but I understand that not everyone agrees about that point, as it seems like some people believe that all birth control is wrong. (I'm not going to comment further on that belief.)

There is evidence that SGK instituted this 'no investigations' policy BECAUSE one of their top people, who is staunchly anti-abortion, wanted to exclude PP's funding. They have not as of yet pulled funding from any of the other 2000+ organizations they give money to. As for the morality issue, I have found SGKs recent legal actions against any other organization using the words 'for the cure' to be morally objectionable.

As for resources for low-income patients, they are limited. Not all low-income women can go to the same place for their screenings, as pretty much every provider has a finite amount of money they can spend on 'charity' cases. So losing some screenings due to PP funding makes it more difficult for these women to get care.

Planed Parenthood, aka planed abortion, and its "live for the moment" needs to be defunded. It is just another part of the elite in this socialistic country programming women to make the wrong choices about their future.
If PP is so effective, why do they keep needing more money?
Studies have proved that birth control increases fertility and cancer problems later in life, but hey, that can't happen to me can it?

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY support the decision also! I am sorry I wasn't more aware in the past that SGK was in allegiance with PP ~ I would have never supported SGK in the first place! There are other places where donations could be made to support cancer research that don't involve a portion of the funds going to PP.

Planned Parenthood is under investigation for so many egregious violations -- protecting pedophiles, rapists, pimps and abortionists; abortion and medical malpractice; financial improprieties --- it's a wonder Komen would ever have their own reputation compromised by this totally unnecessary alliance. Furthermore, mammograms are not offered at PP. You can give yourself a thorough, manual breast exam in the privacy of your own shower (recommended once a month by the ACS) without ever wondering whether you might not be in a sexually safe environment.

Yeah, the link I clicked on said "Poll: Was Susan G. Komen Right to Pull Planned Parenthood Funding?" but I was not given the opportunity to respond to that question. My vote is "Yes. And I'm not at all sure about why SGK would be giving PP half a million dollars for mammograms... why doesn't someoine research how many mammograms Planned Parenthood actually does every year? Maybe that's the real reason the funding was pulled???

The investigation of Planned Parenthood is a spurious political witch hunt. Penn State is under investigation for failing to act against sexual abuse of minors but SGK has not pulled a grant from Penn State.

SGK has the right to put it's money where it chooses. By pulling funds from Planned Parenthood it has entered the political arena and should not be surprised when people decide not to donate to them any more. I know a number of people who have said they will never support Race for the Cure again and who have switched their donations to Planned Parenthood.

I find it ironic that the "pro-choice" folks have an issue with a private foundation exercising their own "choice" of where to spend their money. For starters it's not like the SGK foundation is going to blow the money on a big party, they will spend it in other avenues to help in the fight against breast cancer. Secondly, were talking about $600k or so that SGK foundation provided to PP. That's a mere drop in the bucket compared to the $300 million the tax payers provide to PP. And if we believe that none of that $300m goes for abortion services, the budget of PP has got to be north of $500m/year, so the $600k is far less than 1% of their budget.

This could be the best thing that's ever happened to Planned Parenthood. If droves of people decide to give their money to them instead of raising money for SGK it may more than compensate the difference.

I am pro-choice and pro-planned parenthood. I am sorry that in the eyes of many that pregnant women have lost their constitutional rights. For me, when life begins is a religious belief, I worry about those who believe life begins at 40. (from SNL)

The very sad thing here is that this is a politically motivated decision. A woman has the right to choose whether or not she wants to have a baby, and taking that right away is wrong. The government seeks to dictate the way a person does everything, and pretty soon what kind of toilet paper we use will be up for debate by the candidates.

I completely support the Susan G Komen foundation for their decision. Given the evidence that supports the link between abortion and breast cancer and birth contol pills and breast cancer, it doesn't make sense that they would even support Planned Parenthood ever! Not to mention SGK's stance on the importance of mammograms, which PP does not provide... They only provide breast exams, which are not the same thing as mammograms.

Kristina, a woman does have the right to choose if she wants to have a baby or not... But that choice should be made BEFORE she gets pregnant. If you are going to be grown enough to have sex, you need to be adult enough to understand what can happen.
But to answer the original question, I think it us sad that women will be effected by this and I would hope sgk would focus their money on a different way to help low income when get the preventive care they need. But sgk has a right to pull their money from wherever.

Thank you Meghan. So many forms of birth control to prevent conception and not termination once you have conceived. This is not a cancer but life and SGK has made the right choice to ensure their funds are used for strickly the purpose to prevent cancer and eliminate any question that it will be missed used is in accordance with their rights and mission statement.

Mistakes happen...are you saying that women are not allowed to make mistakes? And what about those women who are raped, where do they fit in? I am all for a woman being responsible and informed, but such is not the case in many low income communities and this is what PP does, it helps those women with education and services.

Komen made a political decision which will affect the credibility of their organization forever, and they have lost the support of women all over this country. Pro-choice and pro-life should not be a part of helping women who are ill with cancer, and that is why Komen made a devastating and wrong decision and will suffer for it.

It is sad to think that a woman has the right to kill an innocent baby because she made a mistake. There is no other answer even in case of rape. Why does the so law allow the rapist to the right to life after creating such a terrible crime but the baby who is truly the innocent victime itself is sentenced to death. There are programs that can assist a woman or young girl in the case of rape without committining muder.

Oh new question since SGK has increased their funding by 100% in two since they decided to not fund PP. Now that they have reversed their decision they should refund all those donations, since it can be perceived as misleading people to donate under false pretense. I know I will no longer support SGK since they support PP.

I don't see how anyone could support Susan G. Komen anymore. An organization should do what is best for the organization. I find is cowardly and shameful that SGK retracted when the issue was blow apart by the liberal media! If people don't like what an organization supports, then they don't have to support it. If people don't like changes an organization makes, then they can pull their support. If someone wants to create their own organzation which better fit their needs, then they can. That is why we live in a free society!
As for people who are talking about "having to support more unwanted babies because Planned Parenthood isn't getting their money", I find that comment beyond disgusting. Unless you are a rape victim, YOU are the person choosing to have sex outside of marriage, YOU know what the consequences may be when you give in to your momentary desires. Women and men know there is no contraceptive out there which is 100% effective. If people in today's society would think of the consequences of their actions before giving in to their wants, we would have a much better world to live in. ABORTION = MURDER.
