Mike Gibbons Named Beachwood's New Head Football Coach

After more than 50 applicants and almost 40 people interviewed, Beachwood High School has chosen its new head football coach -- former Lake Catholic High School standout, Mount Union All-American and Brunswick defensive coordinator Mike Gibbons.

“Mike is a tremendous hire for Beachwood,” Beachwood district athletic director Ryan Peters told BeachwoodBison.org.

“One of things that makes me so excited about Mike is the kids will love him. They will be happy to be around him. I think what will end up happening is these kids will play very, very hard for him. I think he’ll connect with these kids really, really quickly. I think it will be a nice transition going from coach (Ryan) Williams to Mike Gibbons.”

Gibbons will replace Coach Ryan Williams, who resigned in December.

Gibbons won a state title as a player at Lake Catholic and two national titles with the Mount Union Purple Raiders.

He also set a new Mount Union record with 155 tackles in a single season (2005) on his way to earning first team All-America honors.

“I’m very excited about it,” Gibbons said. “It’s a great opportunity to come to a great school, a great school district here at Beachwood. (It was) hard to leave Brunswick. I had a great time there but it definitely feels good to make the next jump to be the head coach. It’s something I’m excited. I’m ready to get working with the kids. I’m excited about that; excited about this upcoming school year.”

Gibbons will also work as a physical education teacher at the high school.
