Beachwood Council to Oppose Ohio Centralized Tax Collection

Resolution to be considered tonight calls move unconstitutional

The City of Beachwood is expected to censure the State of Ohio’s efforts to centralize tax collections at tonight’s City Council meeting.

Financial Services Director David Pfaff said that the push from Ohio Gov. John Kasich to move municipal tax collection to the state would be detrimental to Beachwood.

The resolution calls the move unconstitutional.

The Plain Dealer reported that Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor has said centralization would be a "a great step forward in helping ease the burden" on businesses that are in several jurisdictions or have multiple returns in different municipalities.

If the resolution passes, Beachwood would join many other cities, including Fairlawn and Strongsville, in opposing the move.

Also at tonight’s meeting, City Council will consider a contract for the South Woodland Road rehabilitation project.
