Barack Obama's Kent Stop May Not Prove Costly to City

President is scheduled to visit Kent State Wednesday

President Barack Obama's planned campaign stop in Kent on Wednesday may not prove as costly as recent stops in other small towns across the country.

Kent Police Chief Michelle Lee said information remains scarce about the Democratic incumbent's scheduled visit, but he is expected to be in Kent by 3:50 p.m. Wednesday via the Akron-Canton Airport.

Lee said the time may change.

"That’s going to depend on where exactly he’s going to go," she said. "The plan is he’s going to be on the (Kent State University) campus somewhere."

University officials haven't released any information about the stop and still had no comment when asked about the president's planned visit Friday.

"We can neither confirm nor deny the report," Kent State spokesperson Eric Mansfield said Thursday.

Towns Often Pay for Presidential Visit

Whenever the president makes a campaign stop the U.S. Secret Service coordinates the visit with local police and fire departments.

And the cost of the assistance provided by local departments typically comes out of local coffers.

Officials in Fairlawn, OH, estimate the president's overnight stay there cost the city $34,000 — mostly in personnel expenses.

Max Milien, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, told the Newport Beach-Corona Del Mar Patch that the agency does not reimburse local safety forces for their costs associated with a presidential visit.

"This is not new. We have never reimbursed police departments," Milien said.

Officials in Newport Beach, CA, tried to charge the Secret Service $35,000 for a campaign stop in February.

But the Kent stop may not cost nearly as much.

Lee said the Kent Police Department isn't expecting personnel costs anywhere near the Fairlawn or Newport Beach stops.

She said Kent is only anticipating adding a few officers on traffic detail to aid the president's motorcade as it makes its way from the Akron airport to the Kent State campus.

"Our costs are minimal as of right now," she said. "That could certainly change. We won't know until the location is final."

The speculation around Kent is that the president also will make a stop downtown to see the more than $100 million in redevelopment work, which was kickstarted in part by a $20 million federal transportation grant for PARTA's Kent Central Gateway transit center and parking garage.

Such a stop downtown would involve extra officers on security and traffic details and service department workers for street closures.

"That’s when our costs would rise," Lee said.

She said because he's only scheduled to be in town between one and two hours the costs should be minimal either way. And because right now it looks like he may only stop on campus the university will shoulder much of the related costs.

"Unless plans drastically change, which I don’t foresee that happening," Lee said.

Of course the above comment would be the first on this post. Why is this country, Portage County in particular, so rife with unbridled ignorance and blatant hate speech? So much for the thought of being a great nation. We're an embarrassing, fumbling mess. Who needs team work and compromise when you can just shove the guy next to you deeper into the boiling pot?

What happened to respect for the office of the presidency? He's OUR president. You, me, your neighbor, my friends and so called enemies. We're all in America together. We may not all agree, but we should all respect an incredible symbol of America and our cherished freedoms. He's the president of the nation we all proudly inhabit. Whether you like him or not, he's still the president. I didn't vote for or support George H. Bush years ago, but I was beyond honored to meet him because he was still the President of the United States of America. The presidency is something we should all respect, whether we agree or not. He's the Commander in Chief. Aretha was right, just a little respect...

Rex, once we get a President worthy of respect, I will respect him. This clown? No.

I am sure that when he is not re-elected he can support himself on visits to night-time talk shows. Of course he may not be able to continue taking 5 vacations per year.

I agree with you Andria. Why waste time posting something as foolish as "property values are going to drop in Kent as soon as he enters the city". People like that care more about they're fragile egos then they care about the country.

I have found that the liberal comments on patch are some of the most vile. I have been called every name you can think of and asked to kill myself for having a differing opinion.

Let's not pretend that the lack of civility is only a one way street.

"...the president also will make a stop downtown to see the more than $100 million in redevelopment work, which was kickstarted in part by a $20 million federal transportation grant for PARTA's Kent Central Gateway transit center and parking garage." I thought Mr. Burbick, Fairmount Properties, and perhaps even KSU had already initiated their projects well before the transit center funding. Although "kickstarted in part" limits the causal effect of the transportation project, wasn't it Burbick and Fairmount that got downtown going?

I'm from Solon Brian. While I've read some about your downtown redevelopment, I don't have an intimate knowledge of the details. I think Scott Wolsteins redevelopment of the east side of the flats is a good example of how the private and public sectors can work together. A significant amount of project financing was acquired through city and county mechanisms. It looks like it's going to be a win-win.

All of the other projects, public and private, hinged on the city parking deck that is a leveraged part of the transit center. The transit center was being developed by Kent citizens and staff from Kent, Kent State and PARTA long before the other projects emerged as a catalyst to downtown development (infrastructure first approach). When the stimulus funds were announced, Kent was "shovel-ready". Mr. Burbick's first projects, the Helen Dix Building and Acorn Alley I, got out of the starting gate early because he is a motivated private developer and citizen who was not dependent on other city projects or funding. He works amazingly fast! (That said, he was encouraged by Main Street Kent and the city's renewed focus on downtown development.) The transit center parking, as well as the new city lot behind Davey and Ametek, will help Acorn Alley II as well as the hotel and Fairmount businesses. While the stimulus grant went to PARTA, it helped the city leverage millions on the costs of infrastructure - road and utility upgrades and parking. Parking decks are very expensive to build by themselves. The foundation for this one is part of the transit center. President Obama can indeed take some credit for the revitalization of Kent and the jobs created.

Obama will be warmly welcomed by 90% of the intelligent Kentites.
A very lucky little town that is being reborn when many Iron Belt cities and towns are
crumbling.

The other 10% should plan on enduring Obama as President for another four years.

I can't tell from your post, are you inferring that 10% of the intelligent people don't like Obama or that the 10% are not intelligent? If it is the former, at least you recognize that some intelligent people disagree with Obama and his policies. If it is the later I guess that would mean that you are calling the other 10% stupid, that's not very nice of you.

I agree with you MZ, the republicans haven't cornered the market of unproductive vitriol (see Bush administration). I think the emergence of media such as Fox and MSNBC have created an environment of extremes. I fear, where we used to have the luxury of extreme attitudes, we don't have that luxury given the huge issues we can no longer kick down the road. Being an Independant, I hope both sides aren't foolish enough to embrace this ego driven paralysis while we watch our countries prospects fall off a cliff.

Romney is not running against obama. He's running against the liberal media. They protect him with a fierceness like I have never seen. When something bad happens for obama they just don't report it. I try. Can't find the story anywhere, well may be on Fox. When something bad happens for Romney it's on 24-7 and it is is twisted every which way but the truth. I notice he mostly only speaks to unions and college kids. Since both myself and my husband are now unemployed, we have lots of time since there's no jobs out there. So we are using that time to volunteer for the Romney campaign. The day he gets elected businesses we breath a huge sigh of relief and jobs will be plentiful. Not just union jobs, but all jobs.

I would preface my comments to you soldiermom11 by wishing you and your husband success in your job search. Politics aside, I can't imagine what it must feel like to be in your shoes. I choose not to paint with a broad brush and think of you and your husband as "takers" like Romney has done. You and your husband have much to contribute and I'm sure, when given the chance, you will. I choose not to chastise you for whatever government assistance you may be receiving at this time. The greed on Wall Street led to many folks being out of work and should does not reflect badly on you.
That said, I believe Romney will lose this fall not because of a liberal media, but rather, as a result of the bad performance he has displayed as a candidate. The Republican party did not embrace this candidate in the primary season because they feared this was the way things would go. Today, Republican candidates in tough races are distancing themselves from this candidate to save their own rear ends and not because the liberal media told them to do so. Lastly, I'm concerned that you believe that a Romney victory would lead to plentiful jobs. The Wall Street fraud was 15 years in the making and will take much longer than 4 years to dig ourselves out of. I hope you and your husband can find within yourselves a more reasonable set of expectations. The drivers of the last economy, an overheated housing market and cheap and easy credit, are gone and we must build a new economy from the ground up.

All it takes is a log into nbcnews.com, formerly known as MSNBC.com, to see the headlines written in the trashiest of ways all in an effort to discredit any opposition to Obama. The liberals all cry foul at Fox News but clearly, the others have caught up to that gimmick. So much so that I truly believe there's more liberal media bias than what Fox News could ever spew for the conservatives. Unfortunately the average voter won't take it upon themselves to seek beyond these biased media sources to learn what is truly accurate and will base their votes on horrendous political ads, and poor journalism. Just think what past elections would have been like with social media around back then? Scary.

Question, for all of you who say "Romney is up against the liberal media, blah, blah, blah." How did George Bush win two terms? Didn't he have to go up against the liberal media? How about Ronald Reagan, and the first Bush? They didn't even have Fox News or Limbaugh on their side, but yet they still won! I'm really tired of the whining about the liberal media...get over it.

Dan, for starters let's take a look at the nose dive MSNBC took into the liberal agenda, and now that Microsoft has departed that marriage, NBC is full force. They have admitted that this allows them to pursue the liberal side of the news they've always longed to. Their Progress Forward advertising campaign that started a couple of years ago really took them to that level of bias. You can't compare what candidates today are up against to the presidents of a decade or more ago. It's simple - social media and liberal media weren't the force then, that they are today. Deny that all you want, but it's a fact. Ten years ago we didn't put an app in the hands of the young voters with a smart phone. Ten years ago we didn't have access to news on our smartphones, with headlines attacking candidates. Ten years ago we didn't have Super PACS and incumbents this far out of control urging us all to go vote early (and hopefully without an ID). What part do you think is the same???

You've got to be kidding! You are comparing liberal MSNBC with the juggernaut right wing cable network of Fox News, radio talk shows of Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Laura Ingram, etc, etc? You do have to admit the availability of right wing media far outpowers what's on the left, everyone knows this. And yes, I do separate NBC News from MSNBC. Sorry, no excuses if Romney loses.

Actually they are both incredibly smart. They both graduated from one of the top law schools in the country, and they both have incredible people skills, proven by their management of nationwide campaigns that have raised more money than ever before in history. That they don't serve your interests may be the case, and each candidate serves different interests, but watching them hone their message to target their interest groups shows amazing skill. Mitt has perfectly motivated wealthy voters, Libertarians and anti-government Christians, while Obama has motivated the poor, Hispanics, African-Americans, gays and lesbians, and pro-government Christians. The precision of their speech and their power to move people with their persuasion speaks to their abilities to change the discourse, however I do agree with Obama that the president can't always make change - that takes Congress, which is divided and mean-spirited at the moment. Hopefully they will learn to work together before they take the whole ship down with them. Getting some manufacturing jobs back from China would be a good start, or re-training our workers for the high-tech jobs of the future. Also reigning in the financial excesses of our investment banks would be helpful (for example, Knight Capital loses $400 million on computer algorithm error, or MF Global losing millions in supposedly secured investor assets).

I both agree and disagree with you Fred. Yes they are both men with good educations but the money spent on focus groups has a lot to do with targeting certain segments of the electorate. The skill to connect with people cannot be taught. Either you have it or not. Reagan, Clinton, Obama and, to a lesser extent, Bush had such a skill. They had/have the ability to look into that camera and project a connection to the people. Dole, Gore and Kerry were stiff in front of the camera and that is bad news for Romney. Once again I state, you can blame the liberal media bias for Romney's impending defeat but there was a good reason why the Republican party resisted embracing Romney. Romney, for his part, has spent way too much time bending over backwards trying to convince the conservatives that he's one of them. This has caused Romney to neglect the middle and the middle is where elections are won and lost.
