Aloft Hotel Gets Green Light
New hotel will break ground in Chagrin Highlands in July
Aloft Hotel has finally gotten the green light for their plans to build in Beachwood.
The Beachwood Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously approved preliminary site plans for a new 70,000-square-foot four-story hotel in the Chagrin Highlands.
Developer Scott Berkowitz hopes to break ground at the beginning of July and finish construction in the summer of 2013. The site is an area he will share with the Ahuja Medical Center, Eaton Corporation World Headquarters and Life Time Fitness.
Berkowitz said that the vote at Thursday night's meeting was "quite satisfying."
"But I won't pop the cork on the champagne till we break ground," he added.
Berkowitz first proposed the hotel at Signature Square, which is adjacent to a residential street.
Signature Square property owner The Goldberg Company pulled that proposal after outcry from residents of Bryden Road that the hotel would be disruptive to their neighborhood, and some alleged that Council was giving the developers and property owners special treatment.
The hotel, operated by Starwood Hotels and Resorts, will have 135 rooms, an indoor pool and a lounge.

With no incentives or variances required - imagine that! I applaud Scott for doing this in the responsible way! By the way, it is wrong to characterize the opposition to the Signature Square plans as 'Bryden Road Residents'. Residents from across the city came out against this proposal. You can check the minutes from the council meetings to see the facts of who spoke out and where they were from.

Thanks for leaving your comment! I did write "Bryden Road residents" - though there were residents who came out against it from other places, the largest issue - and, by a vast majority, the largest population - at these meetings were those residents were concerned about a large, lit-up business going into their neighborhood.
